Janina
Today was a big day for our friend from Germany, Janina. She was baptized today. She shared with us all during the morning church service about how she came to the point of wanting to be baptized here in Haiti by Pastor Lex. Janina loves her Haitian church family and was so excited to be baptized in their presence. She planned a big party and went to the open market with Marie Yves yesterday to purchase everything she needed for the party: mangoes, popcorn, hot dogs, potatoes, oil, soda… I love that she was so eager to share this special moment with her family here and that she blessed them, as well.
A Dieu Wawa (to God Wawa)
We met Wawa, a young man who grew up under the ministry of Pastor Enoch, when we first started the mission 12 years ago. He was a musician and a good Samaritan. Any time he saw us walking, he would stop with his mini-bus and give us a ride to where we were going. I never remember a time we saw him that he didn’t have a big smile on his face and look as if he were truly happy to see us. Yesterday morning, as he headed toward Port-au-Prince with two other young men, a large box truck, fully loaded with bags of cement, hit Wawa’s car, head on. The truck driver ran. Wawa’s two passengers were killed on impact. Wawa was still alive for a while, but they couldn’t get him out of the car in time and he died at the scene.
I’d heard about the accident in the morning, shortly after it occurred, but it wasn’t until later in the day that I learned that our friend was one of the victims. I felt my heart sink into my belly. I hate death. Although I am sure that Wawa is safe in the arms of his Savior for all eternity, his young wife, friends and family will have to suffer through the aching in their hearts to continue with life. We pray for each of them, that they would feel the presence of the Lord of Comfort more than ever before.
Nutrition Education
As I shared last week, we’ve registered a lot of kids (600+) for the nutrition program. This past week Angela and Janina worked daily on entering all the data onto a spread sheet. This week we start to add the preschoolers that attend school at MOHI.
We are happy to be partnering once again with Samaritan’s Purse to provide nutritional education to mothers of toddlers and infants, as well as to pregnant women.
It’s so exciting to me to see what God is doing with the medical ministry here at MOHI. Lex and I are so grateful for Angela Parayson’s presence on a daily basis on site here, as well as for the other medical personnel like Sally Heier R.N. and Cheryl Finn (Professor of EMTs and fire science) who come to Haiti to work with us regularly. The Lord has even brought people to enter data and support Angela in the work she’s doing. Very cool.
Planning for America
The Edmé family will be back in America in early September for a few weeks. We hope to be in Miami on the 7th and then renting a car to drive up to New England. Please contact us if you would like to schedule us to come share about MOHI’s work in Haiti with your church, youth group, business associates or friends. Please don’t wait for after our arrival, as our time is limited and we’d love to be able to meet with as many of you as possible. This usually happens only once a year, so please do take advantage of this time. Thank you.
