Building & Education

We’re definitely in a time of building here at MOHI.  As you see in this picture, the church/school building in St. Etienned has been covered this week.  We are currently working on enclosing it.  After that, we are hoping to raise the funds to pour a cement floor.

The little man at the end wall of the church is the local pastor, Hakine Latouch.  Many of you who have visited MOHI in Haïti will remember him as the guy who can drive anywhere.  This is also the area that Marie Yves comes from.  She works full-time at the mission house, keeping our visitors well fed and happy.

The School project in Thozin is our major construction project right now.  I am amazed at how much time and money one can spend on a hole.  The engineers assure me, however, that this is critical to the entire building.  We have progressed into bending and placing re-bar for the “mat” at the rear of the building.

After all that the people of Haïti have been through since January 12th, 2010, we want to make sure this school is built to withstand a major earthquake.  To that end, this is a commercial grade construction project – by American standards.

Before we came to Haïti, Lex shared his heart with me concerning educating the children of Haïti.  You see, given the choice, Haitians prefer to send their children to an expensive, private school so that they can get the best quality education.  For the overwhelming majority of Haitians, it’s just not a possibility.  It was Lex’s desire to provide the very best education possible for the children of the country’s most impoverished families.

This school year, MOHI gave such an education to just over 800 children and youth.  Each year we see a higher percentage of children passing their national exams than any other school in our area.  Today, Lex’s dream is a reality here in Grand-Goâve, Haïti.  We’re so proud of these kids and their determination and hard work.  They are tomorrow’s leaders, being trained today, not only academically, but also in the Bible, morality and living by the Golden Rule.

If you would like to be a part of providing a safe place to along with this excellent education, please join in praying for MOHI, the kids, the staff and the community.  You may also want to become a financial partner in this quest.  No gift is too small.  Click here to donate.

Our family is getting geared up for a brief return to the U.S. early next month.  For those of you who will be in the New England area, please consider joining us for an open house Sunday, Aug. 7th at 3PM in Westminster, MA.  We are so excited about this opportunity to see many of our friends and supporters again.  Please contact us to let us know that you’ll be coming.  Blessings to you all!
